Hotel Overview

KAMENOI HOTEL HIKONE stands by Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan. This hot spring hotel is known for it’s superb views. On clear days you can see Chikubushima Island. Takeshima Island, and even Mt. Ibuki, the highest peak in Shiga prefecture. All rooms feature a lake view. The hotel offers a variety of rooms with a focus on the bright, calm spaces of Japanese-style rooms, Western-style rooms, special Western-style rooms with a lake view bath, and mixed Japanese and Western style rooms. The scenic baths with natural hot spring water from Hikone Sen no Matsubara Hot Spring featuring views of Lake Biwa are the perfect way to wash away your daily cares. You can also relax and enjoy the hot springs in the Biwa no Yu family bath with outdoor bathing and barrier-free accommodations (reservations required).

Although many people think of Lake Biwa when hearing of Shiga prefecture, there are plenty of other charming spots to visit. Hikone Castle, situated on the eastern side of the lake is the symbol of Hikone, and about 10 minutes away by car. It was the castle of the Ii family of the Hikone domain, and the view from the keep, which is a national treasure, looks out over Lake Biwa. Hikone Castle is also known as a great place to meet the official mascot of Hikone City, Hikonyan, which draws many fans and tourists to the spot. Right next to Hikone Castle visitors will find Genkyuen Garden, a pond and round-trip-style garden commissioned by fourth feudal lord of the domain, Ii Naooki. The garden draws many visitors to see the cherry blossoms in spring and the beautiful foliage in autumn. After passing through the stone wall and crossing the Kyobashi Bridge spanning the moat to Hikone Castle, you’ll find Yume-Kyobashi Castle Road. Modeled on an old Edo period castle town, a wide manner of shops line the 350 meter street, from souvenir stores, dining joints, and sweet stores, offering a great chance to shop around with a tasty treat in hand.

About 20 minutes away by car you’ll find Taga Taisha Shrine where the parent deity from the inner shrine of Ise Jingu is venerated. The shrine has attracted devout worshippers since long ago as a god of longevity, marriage, and warding off evil. This is the perfect hotel for getting the most out of a trip to the natural and historic sites of Shiga.
