Atagawa Tropical & Alligator Garden
A world-class alligator garden

Zoo and botanical garden opened in 1958 using water from Atagawa hot springs

Atagawa Tropical & Alligator Garden is located in Izu’s Atagawa Hot Springs. The water from the hot springs is used to create a banana theme park, something that was rare when it first opened. Displaying alligators from the tropics resulted in the banana-alligator park of today. It is said that Atagawa Hot Springs were discovered by samurai Ota Dokan. Atagawa Tropical & Alligator Garden, which suddenly pops up in this good old hot spring town where clouds of steam float about, has been popular since it first opened, and remains loved today over 60 years later.

There are 16 species of alligators totaling nearly 140 animals at Atagawa Tropical & Alligator Garden. There are very few places that have so many species in one location. Not only are the alligators kept here, but there are also tanks where visitors can observe and learn about them through the glass. Although these carnivores may seem fierce, the alligators are popular for being cute as they lazily relax in the hot springs. Feeding time, where you can see the true power of the gators, is also very popular. The alligators are fed once a week. If you time your visit just right, you can see this dynamic event. In addition to alligators, the garden is home to lesser pandas, manatees, and giant tortoises. Seeing so many animals is sure to bring a smile to the faces of children and adults alike.
