The Beppu Jigoku Meguri (Hell Tour) follows the bizarre scenery of one of the most popular regions for hot springs in Japan. Steam and gases burst from the ground, earning the title of "hell" and displaying the massive geothermal power coming from below.
The minerals give the pools and geysers magnificent colours in blues, reds, and whites which have been selected as by the Japanese government as scenic treasures. There are a total of seven pools with evocative names like deep-red blood pond hell, tornado hell, and white pond hell.
Many of the hell pond are in walking distance but some are further away so tourists are advised to travel by bus. There are also foot baths in some pools to take the weight off your feet and relax in the curative water. Unique souvenirs like ointments, hot spring eggs and bath salts are available for purchase. The local crème brûlée has gained fans all over Japan.
