Cape Irago Lighthouse
The white lighthouse standing on the tip of the Atsumi Peninsula, overlooking the Pacific Ocean

A power spot symbolizing love, also known for the Birthplace of Four-leaf Clover Happiness

The Cape Irago Lighthouse, which stands on the tip of Atsumi Peninsula overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Mikawa Bay, was built in 1929 and is the symbol of Irago. It serves as a beacon for the many ships coming and going from Mikawa Port and Kinuura Port, keeping sailors safe. The wonderful view overlooks Kami Island, which is known as the setting for Yukio Mishima’s novel The Sound of Waves. The contrast between the blue ocean and white lighthouse is unforgettable, resulting in it being chosen as one of Japan’s 50 Best Lighthouses for its memorable beauty. The boardwalk around the area is dotted with monuments engraved with Japanese poetry commemorating local fisherman poet Isomaru Kasuya. This is perfect for a stroll while listening to the sound of the waves.

Koijigahama Beach, stretching for nearly one kilometer along the coastline from the Cape Irago Lighthouse to Hiino Sekimon carved out by the rough waves of the Pacific Ocean, is known for its beauty. At sunset on clear days you can see the illuminated lighthouse and sky burning red against an ocean backdrop, setting a truly romantic mood. The Cape Irago Lighthouse is also a popular date spot, and was designated a “Lover’s Sanctuary” (a location particularly appealing to couples) along with Koijigahama Beach in 2006. It is also popular as a power spot symbolizing love, and near the Happiness Bell serving to commemorate the designation, visitors will find the Fortune Lock, and the Birthplace of Four-leaf Clover Happiness.
