BAR Duomo Rosso held its grand opening on February 1, 2018, following renovations of Hotel Nord Otaru’s top floor (7F). The bar offers a rich variety of charcuterie and cheese products made with ingredients from Hokkaido, as well as carefully selected Hokkaido hard liquor and wine. Guests are invited to enjoy a moment of eminence against the nightscape of Otaru.
The bar’s dome-shaped ceiling is meant to invoke the image of a duomo (Italian cathedral), and the bar’s red lights are meant to resemble the light of a lighthouse illuminating Otaru Canal and Otaru Port.
The hotel’s location along the outer corner of Otaru Canal gives the bar a 270-degree panoramic view of the waterway. This location is also near the center of Otaru’s historical scenic area with the historic Former Otaru Warehouse—a popular tourist destination—located nearby. Ordinance-based height limits of the surrounding buildings give the hotel a commanding view not only of the canal to the north and south but also across the city itself.
BAR Duomo Rosso’s charcuterie selection made from Hokkaido pork, Ezo deer, duck, and other meats, as well as the rich variety of Hokkaido cheese, are indispensable companions to the bar’s selection of wine.
The wide selection of Japanese whiskey and other hard liquor, Hokkaido wine, and local beer are popular choices with international guests. In particular, Nikka Whisky—originating from Hokkaido’s Yoichi Town—is a highly popular brand recognized throughout the world, even earning Gold in the International Spirits Challenge (ISC) with its Taketsuru Pure Malt and Yoichi Single Malt varieties.
